America's cities are hubs of activity, culture, and, as it turns out, health and wellness. With people more conscious than ever about their well-being, certain cities are leading the charge towards a healthier, happier population. 

Every year, Mindbody + ClassPass surveys residents in the most populous metropolises to compile our annual Wellness Index. We ask participants about exercise routines, sleeping habits, stress levels, alcohol consumption, family ties, and spiritual fulfillment. Using this data, we’ve determined the top 10 healthiest cities in America.

From wellness trends to social engagement, these cities are setting the standard for a healthy lifestyle by prioritizing exercise, mental health, sleep, and nutrition.

10. Detroit, Michigan

Detroit makes it to the top 10 with a whopping 75% of residents who do not smoke. Additionally, 71% cite having strong family ties, and 64% have spiritual fulfillment. These stats make Detroit a city on the rise in terms of health and wellness.

9. Denver, Colorado

Denver's residents are high on altitude and health. With 81% exercising weekly and a strong sense of community, Denver is a model city for wellness enthusiasts.

The Windy City is not just blowing through; it's making a mark with 60% of its population feeling spiritually fulfilled and 68% receiving regular checkups. Chicagoans also show a strong inclination towards happiness and sobriety.

This Northern California mega-region isn’t just a leader in tech innovation, but also health. With 85% exercising at least once a week and 48% enjoying a life of sobriety, the Bay Area is a beacon of the balanced lifestyle many aspire to achieve.

With an astounding 86% of its population engaging in weekly exercise and 65% engaging in exercise three times a week or more, San Diego is a paradise for fitness enthusiasts. Its residents also showcase a strong inclination towards nutrition, with 44% consuming 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

The nation's capital excels in regular exercise, with 62% of its residents working out three times a week or more. Coupled with an 85% non-smoking rate and a commendable sleep routine, D.C. is where policy meets health.

This city may never sleep, but 75% of its population are non-smokers and 77% maintain close relationships with family and friends. New Yorkers also prioritize hydration and nutrition, making it quite the health-conscious urban jungle.

3. Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas

Big things happen in Texas, including big steps towards health. Dallas-Fort Worth boasts a 77% non-smoking rate and 60% of its residents get a solid 7-8 hours of sleep per night. These figures, coupled with low stress levels, make it a standout in the Lone Star State.

2. Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Florida

This sunny enclave can claim more than just its beautiful beaches—it's a haven for those seeking a stress-free lifestyle. With 46% of its population citing low or no stress and 68% drinking the recommended 6-8 glasses of water daily, Miami-Fort Lauderdale shines as a place where wellness is in the air (and water).

The City of Angels tops our list with an impressive 84% of its population engaging in exercise at least once a week. The sunny weather and plethora of outdoor activities no doubt contribute to Angelenos’ activity levels. Additionally, 81% of residents don't smoke, and 61% enjoy 7-8 hours of sleep each night. 

These cities exemplify what it means to live a balanced lifestyle.
